The European Union is very unlikely to renew its Covid-19 vaccine contracts with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, a French minister said on Friday.

Denmark this week banned the use of AstraZeneca jabs over blood clot concerns, just as the EU said it was expecting 50 million Pfizer vaccine doses earlier than expected.
No final EU decision had been taken, French Industry Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told RMC radio, but "it is highly probable" that no further AstraZeneca doses would be ordered.
The prediction comes after US drugmaker Johnson &amp; Johnson said it would delay its European rollout, also over blood clot fears -- a major hit for the continent's beleaguered immunisation campaign as several countries battle rising caseloads. 
-We have not started talks with Johnson &amp; Johnson or with AstraZeneca for a new contract, but we have started talks with Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna- Pannier-Runacher said.
The J&amp;J and AstraZeneca setbacks are dampening hopes that mass immunisations will allow a swift exit from a pandemic that has killed close to three million people and ravaged the global economy.

As for the status of B&amp;H, it is not the opinions about it that are important, but the facts and international law - they said.

-Neither Dayton, nor the Constitution of B&amp;H give the right of secession to either of the two entities. Any action aimed at dismantling B&amp;H is a violation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. The primary goal of secessionist rhetoric is to move away from the hard work and responsible dialogue needed for reforms that would restore citizens' trust, encourage economic recovery, and contribute to B&amp;H's progress in achieving EU goals. No entity has a future outside B&amp;H - they are categorical.

Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik thanked today in Belgrade the Republic of Serbia and President Aleksandar Vučić for donating 20,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine to the Republic of Srpska.
 
After visiting the Torlak Institute with Vučić, Dodik said that "B&amp;H has shown a complete failure to procure vaccines due to internal divisions."
-We in the Republic of Srpska have managed to provide vaccines, through direct procurement or donation, and 50,000 people have been vaccinated so far, and we estimate that we will speed up that process in the coming months- said Dodik, reports Tanjug.
He added that Serbia is a leader in terms of vaccine procurement and has helped and is helping Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there is also the possibility that B&amp;H citizens will be able to receive the vaccine without special conditions in Serbia and pointed out that Torlak will solve the vaccine problem in the region in the long run.

On Wednesday, the United States paused vaccinations using J&amp;J’s shot while a link with clots was investigated, with Denmark ditching AstraZeneca’s shot over the issue.
British and European regulators have stressed that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks.
A study of 500,000 COVID-19 patients found CVST had occurred at a rate of 39 people out of a million following infection, researchers said. That compares with European Medicines Agency (EMA) figures showing that 5 in a million people reported CVST after getting AstraZeneca’s shot.
The researchers said in a pre-print study that the risk of CVST was 8-10 times higher following COVID-19 infection than it was from existing vaccines for the disease.

-The risk of having a (CVST) after COVID-19 appears to be substantially and significantly higher than it is after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine- Maxime Taquet of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry told reporters.

The study was based on a U.S. health database, and so did not accrue new data on the risk of clots from AstraZeneca’s vaccine directly, as the shot is not being rolled out there.
Taquet said that the mortality rate from CVST was around 20% whether it occurred after COVID-19 infection or a vaccine, indicating the clots were the main risk factor.
Regulators had also observed low platelet levels in reports of vaccine side effects, but the researchers said data was limited on whether that was also the case in those reporting CVST after infection.
The researchers highlighted that COVID-19 was associated with more common clotting disorders than CVST, such as strokes, and that recent debate around vaccines had lost sight of how bad the disease itself could be.
-The importance of this finding is it brings it back to the fact this is a really horrible illness as a whole variety of effects including increased risk of (CVST)- John Geddes, director of NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre.
The research team, from Oxford University, said they worked independently from the Oxford vaccine team which developed AstraZeneca’s shot.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday praised efforts made to rebuild the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, saying continued mobilisation was needed to meet the government's target of restoring the landmark within three years.

Visiting Notre-Dame two years to the day after the world watched transfixed in horror as flames ravaged the cathedral, Macron said "immense" restoration work had already been accomplished since the blaze.
-We are also looking to the three coming years because we will have to meet our targets, and therefore there is a great mobilisation of planning that is very demanding and rigorous- he said.
While the spire collapsed and much of the roof was destroyed on the evening of April 15 2019, the efforts of firefighters ensured the great medieval edifice survived the night.
Macron set a five-year restoration target in the immediate aftermath of the fire, which would mean the cathedral could be visited again when Paris hosts the 2024 summer Olympics.
He reiterated the objective a year later, despite delays brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
While Notre-Dame will be reopened for worship in April 2024, restoration work will actually have to continue beyond that date, according to Jean-Louis Georgelin, a former general handpicked by Macron to lead the effort.
The rebuild is helped by some 833 million euros ($991 million) collected in a national and international donation campaign launched immediately after the fire, although this may not be enough to push the restoration over the finishing line. 
The interior of the cathedral is today marked by a web of scaffolding, surrounded by nets and tarpaulins, where carpenters, rope workers, scaffolders and crane operators hurry around.
Meanwhile, investigators are trying to shed more light on the causes of the fire.
Several shortcomings in the security of the cathedral were identified -- in particular in the alarm system which meant that the alert to firefighters was late -- and in the electrical system of one of the elevators.
An accident, possibly caused by a short circuit or discarded cigarette butt, remains a likely explanation, but the extent of the damage has made drawing any final conclusions impossible.

It is the third time Novartis has made its production capacities available to a competitor during the coronavirus pandemic, as several laboratories strike unprecedented partnerships to fight the global crisis.
Novartis is already collaborating with BioNTech and CureVac in producing Covid-19 vaccines.
The new tocilizumab deal will see Roche's manufacturing expertise transferred to the Novartis Drug Substance Singapore production site during the second quarter of 2021.
-Novartis is fully committed to collaborating with Roche in offering our proven biologics production capabilities- said Steffen Lang, the firm's technical operations chief.

Faced with the desperate shortage of vaccine production capacity in dealing with the pandemic, unprecedented cooperation has been struck between laboratories.
Novartis did not join the race to produce a Covid-19 jab, being no longer involved in vaccines following a major reorganisation in 2015.
Its vaccines were sold to the British firm GlaxoSmithKline, with the exception of its influenza jabs which were sold off separately to the Australian laboratory CSL.

Novartis is already collaborating with BioNTech and CureVac in producing COVID-19 vaccines

It is the third time Novartis has made its production capacities available to a competitor during the coronavirus pandemic
