Over 1,500 people have been evacuated from their homes on the Italian island of Sardinia as fires ravaged around 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres) of forestland, according to local media Sunday.

Olive groves and cultivated areas were also scorched by the blaze, which broke out on Saturday night in the province of Oristano in the west of the island, according to the Italian Rainews24 TV channel.
The flames continue to spread due to strong winds and have yet to be tamed.
About 400 people were evacuated from the town of Scano Montiferro amid the raging flames. Evacuated also took place due to heavy smoke in other small settlements, with a total of 1,500 people having had to leave their homes so far due to the difficulty of breathing.
Some 7,500 people including security forces, firefighters, forest and civil defense teams, and volunteers, rushed to fight the blaze, while approximately 20 aircraft are also involved in the efforts.
Besides, Italy's civil defense body called EU countries to help tame the fires.

Health rights activist Maziko Matemba said the number of deaths can be reduced if the number of vaccinated people increases.
He urged the government to ramp up efforts to secure more COVID-19 vaccines.

North Macedonia's former parliament speaker, intelligence chief and two ex-ministers were sentenced Monday to six years in prison for plotting the 2017 attack on parliament in Skopje.

Several MPs, including opposition leader Zoran Zaev who is now the Balkan country's prime minister, were severely beaten when a crowd of demonstrators stormed the parliament on April 27, 2017.
The protesters, who supported the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party, opposed a proposed coalition government between Zaev's Social Democrats and ethnic Albanians, which they perceived as a threat to national unity.
According to the court verdict, former speaker Trajko Veljanoski deliberately prolonged the session while two ministers, Risto Spirovski and Mile Janakieski, communicated with organisers of the crowd outside the parliament.
All were from the VMRO-DPMNE party.
The court also sentenced the former director of North Macedonia's secret service Vladimir Atanasovski for being a direct organiser of the unrest, saying he ordered a car full of weapons to be brought near the parliament building.
Together they "organised and materially supported the mass protests that culminated in a violent entrance in the parliament", presiding judge Ile Trpkov said.
The officials were all sentenced for undermining the country's constitutional order, but can still appeal.
The court also accused former conservative prime minister Nikola Gruevski, who ruled the country from 2006 to 2016, of being part of the group plotting the attack.
But he was not tried as he has since fled to Hungary where he received political asylum.

The Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor has blocked 49 websites connected to anti-government activist Alexei Navalny, including his own website, his team said on Monday.

The list of blocked sites included navalny.com as well as the site for his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and several regional offices.

The Appellate Division of the Court of B&amp;H rejected the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H against the decision of Judge Tatjana Kosović to impose prohibitive measures on the recently arrested ISA Director Osman Mehmedagić instead of detention.
The appeal requested that the court reverse the decision and order detention as the only adequate measure for the smooth continuation of the proceedings. However, the appeal was rejected, the "Avaz" portal has learned.
The court also rejected the appeal of Mehmedagić's lawyers, who asked for the prohibition measures to be revoked. This means that the Court still considers that there is a reasonable doubt.
Custody was requested for fear that the suspect would repeat the crime, influence witnesses and conceal evidence, and that release could lead to public harassment.

South African pharmaceutical company Aspen said Monday it was releasing its first batch of African-produced Covid-19 vaccines under a licensing deal with the US giant Johnson &amp; Johnson.

The Durban-based company said the first batch was leaving its factory in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth.
In a statement, it described the release as a "significant landmark" -- "the first Covid-19 vaccines to be produced on the African continent, by an African producer for South African and African patients."
The announcement comes as the country, the worst-hit in Africa for coronavirus, ramps up its inoculation programme.
More than 6.3 million jabs have been administered, and in 10 of South Africa's population have received at least a single dose.
The current vaccination regimen applies to people aged 35 and older, but from September 1 will be open to anyone aged 18 years or above.
Africa is working with the European Union and other partners to help create regional vaccine manufacturing hubs.
