Cyprus’ Covid-19 vaccination rollout has covered 80 per cent of the adult population with one dose, health minister Michael Hadjipantelas said Tuesday.

Achieving the four-in-five milestone brings health authorities closer to their ultimate goal of reaching herd immunity against the coronavirus.
Scientists estimate that coverage of 82-85 per cent is needed following the spread of the more potent Delta variant.
Hadjipantelas said that achieving such high vaccination coverage “ranks Cyprus among the Member States of the European Union that have reached and surpassed the goal set at European level”.
Mass vaccination would leave the country better prepared and protected against the virus before winter arrives, he added.
The minister said that 80 per cent of the adult population would be fully vaccinated within the next three weeks.
- We are continuing and intensifying our efforts to boost the vaccination rate even further. -As of 13 September, 80 per cent of the adult population have received a COVID-19 jab, while 76 per cent are fully vaccinated.
According to data released by the health ministry, 39.6 per cent of teenagers aged 16 and 17 have received one shot and 32.5 per cent are fully vaccinated.
Some 24.1 per cent of children aged 12 to 15 have been jabbed, while 13.4 per cent are fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the authorities have rolled out booster shots for people over 65 and vulnerable groups.
So far, 1,421 older adults residing in nursing homes have received a booster shot.
Cyprus has suffered 118,090 coronavirus infections since the pandemic began, with 532 deaths.

An Austrian court on Tuesday jailed for up to nine years two Serbian members of the notorious "Pink Panthers" gang, an international criminal network specialising in jewel heists.

The court in Innsbruck, western Austria, jailed the pair -- aged 37 and 35 -- to four-and-a-half years and nine years respectively for a string of robberies carried out between 2011 and 2017.
Both had pleaded guilty and expressed regret for their crimes, which was reflected in their sentences, the judge said.
Some of the victims were seriously injured during the robberies and the value of the stolen goods was estimated to be two million euros ($2.4 million). 
Both men had already been convicted of similar crimes in Switzerland last year, before being extradited.
The gang, led by masterminds from the former Yugoslavia, was given named the "Pink Panthers" by British police after a diamond theft in London in 2003.
One of the stolen gems had been hidden in a jar of beauty cream, a ploy reminiscent of one of the Pink Panther comedy films starring Peter Sellers.

The presidents of Turkey and Germany discussed bilateral relations, Afghanistan, and migration issues on Tuesday, according to an official statement.

In a phone call, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also discussed regional matters, said Turkey’s Communications Directorate.
Citing Steinmeier's remarks at a panel last Friday, Erdogan welcomed his German counterpart’s praise for the Turkish community in Germany and Turkey.
In a speech marking the 60th anniversary of the signing of the German-Turkish labor agreement, Steinmeier thanked Turkish immigrants who arrived in Germany in the 1960s for contributing to the country’s economic growth and its transformation into a rich, culturally diverse society.
"The people who came at that time, who were called guest workers: You, your children, your grandchildren are today part of what makes Germany. A Germany without you is simply not imaginable hereafter," said Steinmeier.

Erdogan also hailed Turkey and Germany's coordination and solidarity as NATO allies during last month’s evacuations from Afghanistan, stressing the need to maintain the same approach during the "critical process" Afghanistan is now going through.

Stressing that necessary humanitarian aid must be delivered to Afghanistan by the UN and other groups, the Turkish president said no one wants to see a replay of the migrant flow from Syria in 2015.
Germany and the EU should provide support to neighboring countries that bear the burden of Afghan migration in this regard, he added.
Erdogan stated that some European countries have limited the issue to only border security, underlining that Turkey does not have the capacity to shoulder a new migration burden.
In the call, Erdogan also said his country rightfully expects implementation of 2016 Turkey-EU migration agreement in all respects, stressing that the EU must take steps on matters such as revitalizing Turkey's membership negotiations, updating the Customs Union, and visa liberalization for Turkish citizens.
The migration deal was signed on March 18, 2016, as the Syrian civil war continued to uproot millions who then began their "journey of hope" to reach the EU.
The agreement contained six key points: the reinvigoration of Ankara's EU accession process, modernization of their Customs Union, revival of high-level dialogue, visa liberalization for Turkish nationals, cooperation in managing migration flows, and steps in counter-terrorism.​​​​​​​
Turkey has long complained that while it upheld its end of the deal, the EU did not keep its pledges, including on visa liberalization.

At least 63 people tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a dance party in the western German city of Muenster, local media reported on Tuesday.

Authorities were surprised at the high number of infections as only vaccinated or recovered people – both widely believed to have immunity against the disease – were allowed to attend.
Nearly 380 people were at the club during the party, and so far 63 of them tested positive for COVID-19, public broadcaster WDR reported.

But critics say the rule is creating a false sense of security among vaccinated people, as recent studies show that vaccinated individuals can still get infected and transmit the virus to others.

The Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office will check the education of Sebija Izetbegović, Director General of KCUS. This information was confirmed for the "Avaz" portal from the SC Prosecutor's Office.
- According to the information received, a case has been formed in which checks are being carried out - Azra Bavčić, spokeswoman for the SC Prosecutor's Office, told the "Avaz" portal.

We learn that the case was formed after the report of the Directorate for Inspection Affairs of Sarajevo Canton (KUIP) but also the writing of the media and the letter from Zagreb that arrived to Rifat Škrijelj, Rector of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA). 
The Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb confirmed a month ago that for the Director General of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS), there is no documentation on the basis of which they could confirm the authenticity of the student booklet and issue a certificate of passed exams at this higher education institution.
These data were forwarded to Rifat Škrijelj, Rector of the University of Sarajevo (UNSA). Two months ago, Škrijelj decided to ask the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb for information on the basis of which the authenticity of the student booklet published in the media, in which there was a lot of illogicality, would be confirmed. It is a photocopy of the student booklet issued in Zagreb on March 2nd, 1993.
As these were incomplete data, answers were requested from Zagreb, which arrived in Bosnia and Herzegovina institutions in response.
- An inspection of the archives of the Medical Faculty of the University of Zagreb established that Sebija Izetbegović, born on April 6, 1960 in Titograd, Republic of Montenegro, was enrolled in the first year of postgraduate study Ultrasound Clinical Medicine in the academic year 1992/1993 under the student's ID number 4690114. There is no documentation in the students's file on the basis of which we could confirm the authenticity of the student booklet and issue a certificate of passed exams contained in the student booklet - it is stated in the answer of the Dean of the Medical Faculty in Zagreb Marijan Klarica. Two weeks ago, the Directorate for Inspection Affairs of the Sarajevo Canton completed the inspection supervision at the Medical Faculty in Sarajevo.
It was established that Sebija Izetbegović has only a copy of the student booklet as proof of schooling in Zagreb. The KUIP clearly indicated why additional checks were needed regarding her education.

We will be even more active on this issue immediately after the completion of the migrant settlement at the Lipa site, and we hope that it will be soon. However, I can certainly say that this year we had a smaller influx of migrants and more efficient cooperation with the competent state institutions, which resulted in a more favorable security and humanitarian situation - the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Una-Sana Canton Nermin Kljajić told FENA.
The completion of the migrant settlement on the site of Lipa and the accommodation of the first users of the services of the newly built center is expected in the foreseeable future, before the worsening weather conditions.
- Most of the works are progressing according to plan, but we also have certain infrastructural problems that have slowed us down. Here, first of all, I mean solving the problem of constant supply of electricity and drinking water. However, I believe that we will eliminate all problems until the weather worsens and soon move in the first users of the services of the new center with an accommodation capacity of 1,500 people - said the director of the Service for Foreigners Affairs of B&amp;H Slobodan Ujić.
It was also emphasized that in all three reception centers, special attention is focused on the health care of cared for people, so that the health and epidemiological situation is at an enviable level.
The first part of the process of voluntary vaccination against COVID-19 was carried out, so 270 people were vaccinated in the temporary tent settlement Lipa alone.

China on Monday called on the US to “stop all official exchanges” with Taiwan amid reports that the US was “seriously considering” to rename Taiwan's office in Washington.

An uptick in cross-border violence since late August has tested the fragile truce. Over the past week, Palestinian militants have fired rockets into Israel for three nights in a row, drawing Israeli air strikes.

A hearing was held in the Court of B&amp;H on Friday against Osman Mehmedagić Osmica, director of the Intelligence and Security Agency (ISA), according to the proposal of the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H to revoke the prohibition measure and order a one-month detention.
There are still no decisions of the Court of B&amp;H on whether Mehmedagić will be returned to custody.
Judge of the Court of B&amp;H Tatjana Kosović is working on this case also, and she said on Friday that she would make a decision later.
State Prosecutor Oleg Čavka said also on Friday that, according to the B&amp;H Border Police, Osman Mehmedagić and Asim Sarajlić traveled by plane to Antalya on July 21st. According to the prohibitive measures, the suspect must not approach the witness at a distance of less than 50 meters.
They were in Antalya for ten days and returned on the same flight. Sarajlić is a witness in the investigation against Mehmedagić for abuse of office and forgery of official documents.
He stated that the Prosecutor's Office requested further checks and that it had received information from the B&amp;H Border Police that Mehmedagić and his wife, only five days after the measures were determined, traveled to Antalya with Sarajlić.
- They were in Antalya for ten days. They departed and returned on the same flight. The plane they were traveling on was 37 meters long. They crossed the border crossing one minute apart - Čavka explained, adding that Mehmedagić did not inform the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H about the wedding or the trip, although it was stated in the prohibitive measures.
