Moscow on Tuesday extended its suspension of flights with Britain, after officials said they had detected the new UK strain of the coronavirus in Russia.
The halt on air traffic between Russia and the UK was first implemented in late December and was extended on Tuesday until February 1.
The government said the move was taken to "prevent the import and spread of the new coronavirus infection".
The B117 coronavirus strain is thought to have first emerged in southeastern England late last year and has since been detected in dozens of countries around the world.
The head of Russia's consumer watchdog Anna Popova announced last week that one case of the new strain had been detected last month.
She told state television the individual had since recovered and was no longer displaying virus symptoms.
Russia has one of the highest virus infection rates in the world and officials last month conceded the death toll was nearly four times higher than previously reported.

The German government supports the candidacy of Christian Schmidt for High Representative and a decision on that could be made at one of the next meetings of the Peace Implementation Council, Christian Schwarz-Schilling, former High Representative in B&amp;H, told for „Dnevni avaz“.

- I know Schmidt very well. We are friends. I have been informed that there is a possibility that he will be the new High Representative. I told everyone who asked me - I would like it to happen and for now it is a serious initiative - says Schilling.
The German government has confirmed earlier that it has launched this initiative.
Schilling tells for our paper that he talked about the whole story with Chancellor Angela Merkel's office. According to unofficial information, Schilling acts as an informal adviser to Merkel for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Yes, the chancellor's office should be asked about the details, but we talked and I think that a decision can be made soon. It is not bad, I must say that it is time for certain changes - said Schilling.

As he points out, if Schmidt is going to be appointed as the new High Representative, German politician will aim to initiate the resolution of key remaining issues in B&amp;H.
- He will certainly have the support of Merkel and the German government, but also other countries. He is a new face and it is very important that the current High Representative Valentin Inzko is cooperative. Inzko is aware that he could not do much because he did not have the support of the international community. In the case of the new High Representative, that could change, he added.

Asked whether the German High Representative would be supported by the new U.S. administration, Schilling said Biden knows the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina very well and that he is very realistic.
- I do not see any problem in Biden supporting a new beginning for B&amp;H, but that is just my opinion - he added.

In 1993, the new U.S. President Joe Biden made the best assessment of what is happening in B&amp;H that I have ever seen, says Schilling.
- He spent a month in Europe then, I think, and studied the situation. He gave his suggestions which at the time did not get support or there was no will to implement them, but it is still the best thing I have ever seen. I called German Minister Kinkel then and told him about it - he added.

An international trial testing convalescent blood plasma on COVID-19 patients with moderate and severe illness has halted enrolment of severely ill COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care after it found no benefit, trial investigators said on Monday.The decision by the REMAP-CAP trial leaders came after an initial analysis of more than 900 severely ill trial participants in intensive care showed that treatment with the product - an antibody-rich plasma taken from people who have recovered from the pandemic disease - did not improve outcomes.
-There was no evidence of harm associated with the administration of convalescent plasma- (and) the trial is continuing to recruit hospitalised COVID-19 patients who are moderately ill but not in intensive care, scientists leading the trial said in a statement.
-It is biologically plausible that patients who are not producing antibodies at the time of convalescent plasma therapy and those patients with excess virus may benefit more than others. Our additional analyses will explore this- said Manu Shankar-Hari, a clinician and professor of critical care medicine at Britain’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital, who is co-leading the trial.
He added that the initial analysis did not assess plasma’s effects in hospitalised patients with less severe disease. This “remains a very important question” and would continue to be explored in the ongoing trial, he said.
The underlying hypothesis for using convalescent plasma as a potential treatment for COVID-19 patients is that the antibodies it contains could neutralize the virus, stopping it from replicating and halting tissue damage.
But this initial analysis leading to the REMAP-CAP pause in enrolment of critically ill patients showed there was a very low probability - 2.2% - that it reduced death rates or decreased the number of days patients needed intensive care.
-Why convalescent plasma does not seem to improve outcome in severely ill COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU is not yet known. However, it may be because the lung damage is too advanced for convalescent plasma to make a difference- said Alexis Turgeon, a critical care doctor and professor at Université Laval in Canada, who is also working on the trial.
REMAP-CAP is an international clinical trial exploring potential treatments for COVID-19. It has already recruited 4,100 COVID-19 patients at more than 290 clinical sites across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australasia.
Separate findings from REMAP-CAP showed last week that treating critically ill COVID-19 patients with Roche’s Actemra or Sanofi’s Kevzara arthritis drugs significantly improved survival rates and reduced the amount of time patients need intensive care.
The trial is also looking at potential effects of a range of other existing therapies, including anticoagulation medicines, antiplatelet agents, antibiotics, statins and vitamin C.

The proposal to replace the chairman of the Council of Ministers, ministers and their deputies, as expected, did not get the required majority at today's session of the House of Representatives of the B&amp;H Parliamentary Assembly.
After several hours of discussion in the Parliament, where arguments were presented for and against the removal of the Council of Ministers, the deputies voted with 13 votes "in favor", "25 against" and 3 "abstained", which means that the proposal to replace the Council of Ministers did not get the required majority.
At the end of the discussion, the chairman of the Council of Ministers of B&amp;H, Zoran Tegeltija, addressed everyone, saying that the only shortcoming of the current convocation was that he did not communicate with the public.
- To claim that we will be guilty for deaths caused by COVID is, to say the least, incorrect and unfair. It is as if B&amp;H has accused you of being responsible for people who lost their jobs because you did not give them your salary. We did not even present much of what we did, said Tegeltija.

Pope Francis, in another step towards greater equality for women in the Roman Catholic Church, on Monday changed its law to allow them to serve as readers at liturgies, altar servers and distributors of communion.

In a decree, the pope formalised what already has been happening in many countries for years. But with the change in the Code of Canon Law, conservative bishops will not be able to block women in their diocese from those roles.
But the Vatican stressed that the roles were “essentially distinct from the ordained ministry”, and were not an automatic precursor to women one day being allowed to be ordained priests.
In the decree, called “Spiritus Domini” (The Spirit of the Lord), Francis said he had acted after theological reflection.
In an accompanying letter, the pope said he wanted to bring “stability, public recognition” to women already serving in the roles.

In a big shift last August the pope appointed six women, including the former treasurer for Britain’s Prince Charles, to senior roles in the council that oversees Vatican finances.
Francis has already appointed women as deputy foreign minister, director of the Vatican Museums, and deputy head of the Vatican Press Office, as well as four women as councillors to the Synod of Bishops, which prepares major meetings.
He has also set up commissions to study the history of women deacons in the early centuries of the Catholic Church, responding to calls by women that they be allowed to take up the role today. Advocates of a female deaconate hope it could lead to women priests.
Deacons, like priests, are ordained ministers, and as in the priesthood, must be men in today’s Church. They may not celebrate Mass, but they may preach, teach in the name of the Church, baptise and conduct wedding, wake and funeral services and even run a parish with the permission of a bishop.

The first consignment of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine will arrive in Germany on Monday, Health Minister Jens Spahn announced.
Spahn told public television ZDF that Moderna would deliver 2 million doses until the end of March and nearly 50 million doses during the course of 2021.
-The first batch of vaccines will be distributed to the federal states by tomorrow and we will be able to also use these vaccines- he said.
The US pharma company Moderna’s jab is the second vaccine approved in the EU, after the BioNTech/Pfizer's jab, which was approved in December.
Spahn said German health authorities would use both Moderna and BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines in the coming days, but citizens would not be able choose which specific brand of COVID-19 vaccine they want to receive.
Germany began administering the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine on Dec. 26, soon after its approval by the EU, but Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government faces harsh criticism for the slow pace of vaccination.
As of Sunday, nearly 533,000 doses were administered in Germany -- compared to more than 9 million in China, 8 million in the US, 2 million in the UK and 1.8 million vaccinations in Israel.
Germany has the fifth-highest tally of COVID-19 infections in Western Europe, behind the UK, France, Italy, and Spain.
The national total stands at over 1.92 million cases with at least 40,686 deaths.

The 15th session of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina is being held today. Improving the efficiency, quality, independence and transparency of the judiciary, which leads to creation of a functional and efficient judicial system, will be the focus of the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HJPC) in the coming period.
In cooperation with the Swedish Judicial Administration, the Swedish Enforcement Agency, B&amp;H courts and sister courts from Sweden, and with the financial support of the Swedish Government, the HJPC will work intensively in the next three years through “Improving Court Efficiency and Accountability of Judges and Prosecutors” project in B&amp;H on the implementation of activities that lead to the improvement of the efficiency of the judiciary and ensuring equal access to justice and equality of all citizens before the law, the HJPC B&amp;H said.
Based on the results of the conducted analyses, an assessment was made of the segments in which more proactive and reform action is necessary, in order for the set goals to be ultimately realized. Therefore, the focus of the planned activities will be on increasing the efficiency of judicial institutions, through planned activities and the establishment of a more efficient organization of work processes.
At the same time, intensive work will be done on establishing a system for monitoring the performance of existing work capacities in courts, analyzing the procedure for appeals in civil proceedings, improving executive procedure in judicial systems in BiH, improving gender equality in BiH justice and the position of vulnerable groups in contact with justice, as well as on establishing proactive communication with the media and the public in order to increase the transparency of the work of courts.
Changes in the work of courts will be reflected through the introduction of new methodologies, and cooperation has already been established with a number of courts from all over BiH that will approach this form of reform process, the HJPC BiH said in a statement.

US President-elect Joe Biden will receive his second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Monday, his office announced, three weeks after his first injection was broadcast live on TV to boost public confidence in the jab.
Biden, 78, told Americans "there's nothing to worry about" when he got his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware on December 21.
His team said that his second jab would also be done in front of the media, without giving further details.
More than 374,000 people have died from the coronavirus in America, and Biden on Friday slammed President Donald Trump administration's troubled distribution of vaccines as a "travesty."
About 6.7 million Americans have so far received their first shot -- far short of the target of 20 million by the end of 2020.
But 22.1 million doses have been distributed nationwide, underlining the logistical challenge of getting the injections administered to the elderly and health workers who are the priority.
Both vaccines currently authorized in the US, developed by Pfizer and Moderna, require recipients to receive booster shots after three and four weeks, respectively.
Biden, who will be inaugurated on January 20, plans to release every available dose of vaccine, rather than holding back half to make sure people receive their booster shots on time as is the current protocol.

One year ago, China announced the first death from a new virus in Wuhan -- 12 months later, Covid-19 has claimed 1.9 million lives in an unrelenting march across the world.
But in the central Chinese city of 11 million where the first known outbreak started, the virus has been extinguished and residents are proud of its revival.
On Monday morning, the anniversary slipped by unmarked in Wuhan -- commuters moved freely to work while parks and riverside promenades buzzed with walkers in a city determined to banish its tag as the coronavirus ground zero.
In a sparse report on January 11, 2020, China confirmed its first death from an unknown virus -- a 61-year-old man who was a regular at the now-notorious Wuhan wet market linked to many of the early cases.
The world would soon become grimly familiar with the disease that killed him as Covid-19.
Little is still known about the first victim, including his name, while the market where the first reported clusters of cases were traced back to has remained closed, surrounded by boarding.
After a long wrangle, China on Monday said independent experts from the WHO will be allowed into the country from Thursday, with the international community hoping they can visit the market and retrace in detail those early days of the virus in Wuhan.

The city has now bounced back and residents are revelling in the freedoms they enjoy. 
-Wuhan is the safest city in China now, even the whole world- 66-year-old resident Xiong Liansheng told AFP on Monday.
Commuters headed to work and others strolled along the riverfront -- a sharp contrast to the countries still under strict lockdowns and restrictions.
-The Wuhan people's awareness of epidemic prevention and control is very high -- even my two-year-old grandson will wear a mask when going out- said Xiong. 
Elderly couples danced, some masked, but hands clasped as social distancing withered in the winter sunshine in a busy park next to the Yangtze river.
-Most cases in China are imported from overseas now and our country has a good control of it- said Zhong, an 80-year-old woman giving only one name.

China has faced criticism at home and abroad over its initial handling of the virus, including attempts to silence whistleblowers and failure to report cases for days in early January.
Two weeks after confirming the first death, Wuhan and the surrounding province were put under lockdown.
Chinese authorities are trying to stamp out a series of local outbreaks, reporting 103 new infections on Monday -- the highest figure since July last year -- most in northern Hebei province.
Transport links have been cut and schools closed in an effort to contain the cluster. 
There are also mounting fears that travel plans for hundreds of millions of people for the Lunar New Year next month may be ruined as virus controls tighten.
But it is a fraction of the daily infections in the United States, Britain and many European countries.

Year on from first Covid-19 death, Wuhan basks in recovery

Seven mass coronavirus vaccination sites opened across England on Monday as the government races to dose millions of people while a new strain of the disease runs rampant across the country.
The sites include football stadiums and a horse racing course, and are located in cities including Bristol, London, Newcastle and Manchester.
They are to vaccinate thousands per week and several more sites are expected to follow, according to NHS England.
Hospitals and pharmacies are set to begin offering the vaccine later this week, with the government hoping to have doses available for 12 million of England's 56 million population by mid-February, starting with the most vulnerable.
More than 1.2 million people have already been vaccinated in England, since the roll-out began of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab on December 8. Britain has since approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna jabs.
-We are mobilising the government, NHS (National Health Service) and the armed forces as part of a massive national effort- said health minister Matt Hancock.
Care home residents, all those aged 70 or above, frontline health workers and clinically extremely vulnerable people are first in line for the vaccines.
Britain is grappling with its worst outbreak of the disease since it hit the country early last year.
The record case rates and daily death toll are being blamed on a new, more transmissible strain, which has piled pressure on the NHS, leading to warnings of shortages of critical care beds.
The state-run NHS risks being overwhelmed and the country is in its third lockdown until at least mid-February, with predictions the restrictions could last even longer. 
-The next few weeks are going to be the worst weeks of this pandemic in terms of numbers into the NHS- England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty told BBC television on Monday.&nbsp;

-What we need to do, before the vaccines have had their effect... is we need to really double down- on observing lockdown measures, he added. 
Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi also urged the public to follow the rules, which some have criticised for not being strict enough.

Britain on Saturday said it had recorded over three million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began last year, having on Friday reported a record 1,325 deaths over a 24-hour period of people who tested positive for the virus.
The full death toll now stands at more than 80,000, one of the highest in Europe alongside Italy.
